Job description
- Characterize phenotype and function of NK cells in individuals with different backgrounds (biological sex, ethnicity/genetic background, age).
- Using molecular clones, produce HIV subtypes which will be used in the in vitro assays. Most of the experiments will be performed in a BSL-3 facility.
- Develop strategies to eliminate the HIV latent reservoir in HIV-infected patients using bi-specific reagents (BiKEs). Evaluate efficiency of BiKEs in inducing NK cell mediated killing of cells infected with HIV-1 subtype A,B, C and D using in vitro models of HIV infection as well as primary cells.
- Investigate the combination of different latency reversing agents (LRAs) and BiKEs on NK cell-mediated killing of cells infected with HIV-1 subtype A,B, C and D.

The Department of Immunology has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that support basic and translational research. The PhD student will work in close collaboration with other work groups within Erasmus MC, as well as with other investigators of the Spiral project in the Netherlands and sub-Saharan Africa.
Qualifications and skills
- Hold a master degree with strong background in the area of immunology and viral infections/HIV.
- Experience with NK and T cell immunology, HIV infection and multicolor flow cytometry is a plus.
- Has team spirit since the candidate is expected to collaborate closely with scientists within the Erasmus MC as well as national and international collaborators.
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic about research into HIV cure.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

Terms of employment
- You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 3.017,- in the first year and increases to € 3.824,- in the 4th year (scale OIO).
- Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
- Pension insurance with ABP, we take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
- Special benefits, such as an incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. There is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
