Job description
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are ubiquitous and influence the normal functioning of the endocrine system. It has often been suggested that they play a role in the development of non-communicable diseases in the population, such as diabetes, obesity, and respiratory diseases. However, their exact impact on human health across the life course, and the detailed biological processes that play a role, are not well understood. The aim of this project is to use population-based cohort data to examine the biological processes associated with exposure to EDCs and how these relate to human health. In particular, the project will focus on DNA methylation and immune-related proteomic pathways in early life.
As postdoctoral researcher you will be embedded within the Generation R Study, a unique Rotterdam-based early-life cohort study from fetal life onwards that started in 2002 and has been following growth, development and health of nearly 10,000 children into early adulthood. Data collection in the Generation R Study includes longitudinal data from pregnancy up to 17 years of age, collected based on questionnaires, extensive in-person measurements at the Generation R research center, and advanced molecular and imaging data. You will use environmental, biological and health data for this project.
Your task will be to analyse data and write peer-reviewed international publications. In addition, the postdoctoral researcher will participate in consortium activities, including meetings and reporting. Depending on experience and feasibility, PhD supervision may be part of the position. You will be supervised by Dr. Janine Felix, principal investigator for pediatric population epigenetics and deputy head of the Generation R Core Facility, and Dr. Liesbeth Duijts, principal investigator for pediatric respiratory health in Generation R.
Work environment
Generation R and Generation R Next are population-based cohort studies, designed to identify early environmental and genetic causes and causal pathways leading to normal and abnormal growth and development from the preconception and fetal phase into young adulthood.
The project is part of the large EU-funded consortium ENDOMIX involving multiple national and international partners. Overall, ENDOMIX will examine associations and causality of EDCs with adverse health across the life course and underlying biological mechanisms using robust data from multiple European cohorts and applying various statistical modelling approaches and data types, with a particular focus on the role of the immune system.
Qualifications and skills
- PhD degree in medicine, biomedical sciences, health sciences, or a related discipline
- Affinity with scientific questions around early-life health and biological mechanisms, such as genetics, epigenetics and/or proteomics
- Above average computer and statistical analytical skills, with experience in R
- Experience in analysing at least one type of “omics” data, preferably in cohort studies
- Analytical mindset and skills
- Ability to work independently and develop initiatives
- Collaborative attitude
- Excellent writing and presenting skills
- Proficiency in English
