Job description
Cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders are rising globally, presenting significant public health challenges. Recent research highlights the crucial role of nutrition and lifestyle in mitigating cognitive decline and promoting brain health. This project, through an international consortium, will unite experts from molecular epidemiology, neuroscience, nutrition, and lifestyle to explore the connections between diet, lifestyle, metabolic status, and cognitive resilience in aging populations. Using data from the Rotterdam Study cohort (ERGO-onderzoek), including brain scans, interviews, and blood omics measurements, the project will investigate how a healthy diet influences brain aging and metabolism. It will then develop targeted nutritional interventions through animal model studies and clinical trial in collaboration with other consortium partners and explore new biomarkers for accelerated brain aging. The ultimate goal is to develop effective strategies for healthy brain aging.
This project offers a unique opportunity for those seeking experience with large-scale molecular and epidemiological datasets. The successful candidate will analyze datasets, present findings at (inter)national conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and guide Master's and PhD students.
Work environment
At Erasmus MC, we are committed to improving today's healthcare and shaping the future of health through pioneering research, education, and care. Our state-of-the-art facility is equipped with the latest techniques, equipment, and care processes.
The candidate will join the department of Epidemiology, working with the Molecular and Systems Epidemiology research line, led by dr. M. Ghanbari. This department is a global leader in epidemiological research, particularly in brain-related diseases, and hosts the Rotterdam Study—a long-term population-based cohort study that began in 1990 and follows nearly 18,000 individuals aged 40 and older. The cohort study collects comprehensive data, including questionnaires, in-person measurements, and advanced molecular and imaging data. The candidate will collaborate with a supportive, inclusive team of scientists and participate in an international consortium, working alongside data scientists with diverse expertise. This position offers ample opportunities for professional growth as an academic researcher through both formal and informal education and supervision.
Qualifications and skills
The candidate must have a completed PhD in Molecular Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in population-based omics data analysis, lifestyle/nutrition, and neurological diseases, though applicants with knowledge at the intersection of these disciplines are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate is passionate about science and healthcare, demonstrating creativity, perseverance, and a strong team spirit. Advanced written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
