Job description
As a data engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Managing and optimizing our OMOP CDM database, including data transformation and validation.
- Maintaining ETL processes for loading data into the OMOP model.
- Implementing quality controls and monitoring data consistency and integrity.
- Automating and documenting processes for efficient data updates and governance.
- Collaborating with researchers, data analysts, and clinical experts to make data usable and accessible. You will also guide them in using tools like OHDSI Atlas and support them in conducting studies on various OMOP databases (e.g., Erasmus MC, IPCI, and within the DARWIN EU project).
Work environment
You will be working in the Medical Informatics department, which is internationally recognized as a leader in health data standardization and analysis. The department provides a dynamic, challenging, and collaborative research environment.
The Health Data Science team specializes in using routine healthcare data, with the OMOP CDM playing a central role in various research projects. Team members closely collaborate with physicians and researchers at Erasmus MC and are internationally recognized leaders within the OHDSI community, leading projects such as DARWIN EU. Additionally, the department manages the IPCI general practitioner database.
Qualifications and skills
Education & Experience
- A completed degree in (Medical) Informatics, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Clinical Technology, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of experience as a Data Engineer, preferably in healthcare or the biomedical sector.
Core Knowledge
- OMOP Common Data Model (CDM) Expertise
- Comprehensive understanding of the OMOP CDM schema
- Knowledge of OMOP vocabularies
- Familiarity with OMOP ETL best practices
Technical Skills
- Experience with SQL & relational databases
- Experience with R for data processing and scripting
- Experience with Java is a plus
- Familiarity with the OHDSI ecosystem and tools (such as Atlas, Achilles, and HADES R packages) and OMOP ETL frameworks and tools (such as WhiteRabbit & Rabbit-in-a-Hat) is a plus
Soft Skills
- You will work in a multidisciplinary team, so strong communication skills and a proactive attitude are essential.
- You are analytical and enjoy solving complex problems.

Terms of employment
You will join a motivated team that collaborates with both internal and external partners. Additionally, we offer:
- A one-year contract with the possibility of extension.
- A gross monthly salary between € 3.493,- and € 5.504,- (scale 10) based on a 36-hour workweek.
- Opportunities for job-related training.
- The option to work partly from home and the possibility to work four 9-hour days.
- Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
